Cricket Highlights, July 10: Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka 2025 (1st T20I) – BAN vs SL

BAN vs SL (1st T20I) – Highlights

The opening match of the Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka at Pallekele on July 10, 2025, delivered an exciting contest between two competitive teams in the first T20 International. Sri Lanka, playing at home, managed to chase down Bangladesh’s modest total with seven wickets in hand, securing a confident victory with six balls to spare. The match saw some powerful hitting, clever bowling, and a few moments of individual brilliance that shaped the outcome.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat, accumulating a total of 154 for 5 in their 20 overs. A blistering 38 off 22 balls from Parvez Hossain Emon gave the innings early momentum. Parvez’s strike rate of 172.72 was imperative for Bangladesh to build momentum in their innings. Bangladesh lost consistent wickets, which limited their scoring. Tanzid Hasan didn’t mind reaching 16 with a strike rate under 100, which meant he was unable to build a meaningful partnership early on. Thanks to Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s measured innings of 29 from 23 balls, the team set a total worth defending.

The middle order struggled to accelerate consistently, and the captain Litton Das was dismissed cheaply for 6, caught lbw by Vandersay, which hampered Bangladesh’s momentum. Mohammad Naim remained unbeaten on 32 and showed composure towards the end, while Shamim Hossain blasted a quick cameo of 14 off 5 balls to push the total to a competitive 154. The bowling from Sri Lanka was led by Maheesh Theekshana and Dasun Shanaka, who took key wickets at crucial junctures and kept the scoring in check. Theekshana was particularly effective, claiming 2 wickets for 37 runs in his four overs.

Chasing 155 for victory, Sri Lanka started their innings explosively. Blazing with intent, Nissanka carved out a fiery 42 in just 16 balls, cracking five stylish fours and launching three into the stands. His 262.50 strike rate put Bangladesh on the back foot early. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck back by removing Nissanka, momentarily halting the momentum.

The key to Sri Lanka’s successful chase was the masterclass innings by Kusal Mendis, who played a composed yet aggressive knock of 73 runs from 51 balls. His 5 fours and 3 sixes punctuated a well-paced innings that saw Sri Lanka maintain a healthy run rate throughout. By maintaining composure throughout the chase, Kusal Mendis emerged as the key player and natural choice for Player of the Match.

Contributing a useful 24, Kusal Perera was eventually sent back by Rishad Hossain. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka and Avishka Fernando ensured no further damage was done with quickfire finishes, guiding their team to a seven-wicket win in the 19th over.

Bangladesh’s bowling effort was led by Mohammad Saifuddin, Taskin Ahmed, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who tried to contain the runs but found it difficult against the aggressive batting lineup of Sri Lanka. Despite some tight spells, the bowlers could not prevent Sri Lanka from reaching the target comfortably.
