BAN vs SL (2nd ODI) – Highlights
The second ODI between SL and BAN at Colombo turned out to be an intense contest, with Bangladesh emerging victorious by 16 runs in a thrilling finish. The match showcased some brilliant batting and bowling performances from both sides but it was Bangladesh’s balanced effort and clinical execution in the death overs that ultimately made the difference.
BAN won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch at Colombo which had some pace with a bit of spin. There were the usual ups and downs in the Bangladesh innings, but it all revolved around a mature performance from Parvez Hossain Emon who made a very composed 67 runs off 69 balls which included six 4s and three 6s. Emon created a solid platform for Bangladesh.
Towhid Hridoy contributed largely to the Bangladesh total with a very good knock of 51 runs which kept the scoreboard ticking and anchored the middle order nicely. Bangladesh was not able to build on one partnership in particular as wickets fell regularly, but still managed to achieve a competitive total of 248 in 45.5 overs. Extras included, Bangladesh accumulated 248 runs, reflecting a bit of a loose Sri Lankan bowling effort in the latter half of the innings with the extras contributing 17 of those runs.
Claiming 4 wickets for just 35 runs in 9 overs, Asitha Fernando significantly influenced the game for Sri Lanka.Wanindu Hasaranga also bowled well, taking 3 wickets for 60 runs in nearly 10 overs. However, the rest of the bowling lineup couldn’t maintain consistent pressure on the Bangladeshi batsmen.
SL began poorly in their pursuit of 249 for victory, when Pathum Nissanka was dismissed very early for 5. Kusal Mendis played a brilliant innings of 56 off just 31 balls, which helped to provide the necessary tempo. Sri Lanka’s innings was anchored by Janith Liyanage, who scored 78 runs off 85 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Though they battled hard, regular wicket falls denied Sri Lanka the partnerships needed to chase down the target.
Tanvir Islam starred with the ball for Bangladesh, clinching 5 wickets for 39 runs in his full quota and securing the Player of the Match honors. Tanvir was exceptional, consistently hitting the right areas and picking crucial wickets at vital moments, which derailed Sri Lanka’s batting momentum. Tanzim Hasan Sakib also made important contributions with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 34 runs in his 4.5 overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz chipped in with a valuable wicket and kept things tight during his 10 overs.
The fielding efforts of Bangladesh were also noteworthy, with a key run-out and some sharp catches helping to keep the pressure on Sri Lanka throughout the innings. They were dismissed for 232 in 48.5 overs, coming up 16 runs short.
This win gives Bangladesh a 2-0 lead in the series and puts them in a commanding position. Both teams displayed moments of brilliance, but Bangladesh’s collective team effort, especially in the bowling department, proved decisive.
