SL vs BAN (1st ODI) – Highlights
Sri Lanka made a strong start to their home ODI series against Bangladesh with a convincing 77-run win in the first match at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. On a surface that offered a bit for both batters and bowlers, it was Charith Asalanka’s magnificent century and Wanindu Hasaranga’s magical spell that proved to be the turning points in the game.
Sri Lanka, after being put in to bat, suffered early jolts with both openers dismissed cheaply. Pathum Nissanka fell for a duck to Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Nishan Madushka followed soon after, nicking one off Taskin Ahmed. The top order further crumbled as Kamindu Mendis was also sent back without scoring. With the hosts reeling at 29 for 3, it was captain Charith Asalanka who stepped up to anchor the innings.
Asalanka was part of critical partnerships — first, with Kusal Mendis, who scored a quick-fire 45. Mendis melon mustane 45 44 on 43 balls, and with Janith Liyanage, who made 29. Captain’s innings was a mix of caution and aggression, as he scored a respectable 106 off 123 balls, powered by six fours, four sixes, before Sri Lanka posted a defendable total. Then a late-innings blitz from the lower middle-order, Milan Rathnayake, and Wanindu Hasaranga took Sri Lanka to 244 and were bowled out in the last over.
For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed was the standout bowler, picking up four wickets for 47 runs in his ten overs. He was well supported by Tanzim Hasan Sakib who took three wickets, troubling the Lankan batters with his consistent line and length. Tanvir Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto chipped in with a wicket each, keeping the pressure on throughout the innings.
Chasing a target of 245, Bangladesh started well with Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan laying a good foundation for a solid start. Emon fell for 13, but Tanzid looked in great shape, scoring 62 off 61 balls with nine 4s and a 6. However, once Tanzid fell, Bangladesh fell apart. They fell from 100 for 2 to 103 for 6 in just 10 balls.
Wanindu Hasaranga was the chief destroyer, wreaking havoc with his leg spin. He took four wickets for just 10 runs in his 7.5 overs, completely dismantling the Bangladeshi middle order. Kamindu Mendis also chipped in with a valuable spell, picking up three wickets and removing the lower order. Jaker Ali stood firm with a determined 51, yet found no reliable partner at the other end.
Bangladesh’s scoreboard flatlined at 167, as 35.5 overs delivered more heartbreak than hope in a 77-run thud. Charith Asalanka was deservedly named Player of the Match for his captain’s knock that laid the foundation for Sri Lanka’s win.
