WI vs IND (1st Test) – Highlights
Â
IND delivered a dominant performance to crush WI by an innings and 140 runs in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. From start to finish, the home side dictated terms, with Ravindra Jadeja producing a match-winning all-round display that earned him the Player of the Match award. His unbeaten century and four-wicket haul showcased his immense value to India’s Test setup, while West Indies struggled to find stability in both innings.
Â
The visitors, opting to bat first, faltered against India’s fiery pace attack led by Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Siraj was relentless, swinging the ball both ways to dismantle the top order and return with figures of 4 for 40. Bumrah provided crucial breakthroughs from the other end, claiming three wickets. Kuldeep Yadav’s spin added to the woes of the Caribbean batters, picking up two scalps as West Indies were bundled out for 162 in just 44.1 overs. Justin Greaves’ fighting 32 and Shai Hope’s 26 were the only notable contributions in an otherwise disappointing display.
Â
In reply, IND batting unit produced a commanding effort. KL Rahul marked his return to form with a patient century, compiling 100 off 197 deliveries with 12 boundaries. His partnership with captain Shubman Gill, who made a fluent 50, helped India build a strong platform. Dhruv Jurel then stole the spotlight with a superb 125, his maiden Test century, constructed with confidence and composure. Jadeja complemented him perfectly, playing a steady yet impactful innings of 104 not out, which included six fours and five sixes. Their 206-run stand for the fifth wicket completely deflated the West Indian bowlers. India declared at 448 for 5, securing a massive lead of 286 runs.
Â
The WI needed a miraculous effort to stay alive, but their second innings followed a similar pattern. Once again, Siraj and Jadeja proved too good for the batters. Siraj’s pace and Jadeja’s spin combined to destroy the middle order, while Kuldeep chipped in with two late wickets. Jadeja was the chief architect, taking 4 for 54, and Siraj again bagged three crucial wickets. Despite Alick Athanaze’s gritty 38 and a few late blows from Jayden Seales, the visitors were dismissed for 146.
Â
India’s all-round dominance was evident throughout the three days. Their bowling unit maintained discipline and variety, while the batters capitalized on every opportunity. The balance of experience and youth was visible, with contributions coming from across the lineup. For West Indies, there will be questions about their batting technique and inability to handle the Indian spinners on subcontinental pitches.
Â
With this emphatic victory, India take a 1-0 lead in the series, reaffirming their position as a powerhouse in home conditions. The focus will now shift to the second Test, where West Indies must regroup quickly to avoid another one-sided affair.
