QG vs IU (Match – 23) – Highlights
In an electrifying contest held at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium during the 23rd match of the HBL PSL X, Quetta Gladiators emerged victorious with a dramatic two-wicket win over Islamabad United, successfully chasing a 158-run target in 19.5 overs. A standout unbeaten 64 from Hasan Nawaz and a clinical four-wicket haul by Faheem Ashraf propelled Quetta to a pulsating triumph that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final delivery.
Commencing their chase, the Gladiators built early momentum by amassing 28 runs in under three overs. However, their top order was swiftly destabilized, with captain Saud Shakeel dismissed at the end of the third over, followed closely by Finn Allen, who contributed a quickfire 20 off 13 balls.
A crucial 52-run alliance between Rilee Rossouw (27 off 24 balls, including four boundaries) and Hasan Nawaz helped stabilize Quetta’s innings after the initial setbacks. Unfortunately, the stand was disrupted by a calamitous run-out due to a miscommunication between the two batters. Rossouw fell just shy of the halfway mark at 9.5 overs, and the team score at 80.
The dismissal initiated a chain reaction of collapses. Mark Chapman was the next to depart in the subsequent over, falling to Mohammad Nawaz, who had earlier played a pivotal role with the bat for Islamabad. This breakthrough triggered a middle-order disintegration, reducing Quetta to a precarious 117 for seven by the end of the 16th over.
Nevertheless, lower-order resilience emerged through Mohammad Wasim Jr., who played a crucial supporting role by crafting a quick 16 from 11 balls. His partnership with Hasan Nawaz added a valuable 26 runs off just 18 deliveries, temporarily anchoring the innings during a tense phase. Wasim, however, was dismissed on the last ball of the 19th over by Naseem Shah, leaving the final over delicately poised.
The pressure was tremendous with two wickets remaining and 12 needed off the final six deliveries. Nevertheless, Hasan Nawaz, who won Man of the Match in the end, remained composed. Benefiting from three dropped chances in the final over, he seized the moment by launching two colossal sixes off Muhammad Shahzad, sealing the chase with a ball to spare. Hasan’s unbeaten 64 came from 41 balls and included two boundaries and four sixes—an innings marked by composure, aggression, and maturity beyond his years.
Earlier in the evening, Islamabad United, having been invited to bat, blazed to 50 without loss in under five overs, thanks to the aggressive starts from Kyle Mayers (22 off 17) and Sahibzada Farhan (39 off 24). But their promising beginning was undone by Quetta’s disciplined bowling. Faheem Ashraf was especially devastating, claiming four wickets for just 25 runs in three overs. His double-strikes in the ninth and 13th overs dismantled United’s middle order.
Despite a valiant 49 off 34 balls from Nawaz and cameo support from Jason Holder (14* off 11), United could only manage 157 for nine, a total that proved insufficient in the face of Quetta’s nerve and resolve.
