IRE vs WI (2nd ODI) – Highlights
In what promised to be a high-octane second ODI at Malahide, Dublin on May 23, 2025, a commanding West Indies batting performance, headlined by Keacy Carty’s sublime century and Matthew Forde’s late-innings carnage, was unfortunately overshadowed by inclement Irish weather that brought the contest to a premature and inconclusive end.
Opting to bat first on a true surface, West Indies rode on the back of Carty’s elegant 102 off 109 balls, laced with 13 fours and a solitary six. The 27-year-old right-hander played with composure and precision, anchoring the innings masterfully after early setbacks. His partnership of 81 runs with skipper Shai Hope (49 off 57) steadied the ship following the early dismissals of Brandon King (8) and Evin Lewis (20), who both fell within the powerplay.
Hope, ever the dependable figure, continued to accumulate with typical fluency before falling to Liam McCarthy, who emerged as Ireland’s most successful bowler. McCarthy’s figures of 3/66 included key breakthroughs, but he could do little to contain the carnage that followed.
The real fireworks arrived in the final 10 overs. Matthew Forde was the one who altered the tide of the innings, although Justin Greaves gave stability in the middle order with a quick 44*. Forde bludgeoned 58 runs from just 19 deliveries, including eight towering sixes, lighting up Malahide with an extraordinary strike rate of 305.26. His cameo, coupled with Gudakesh Motie’s 18 off 8, propelled West Indies to a mammoth total of 352/8 — their highest ever ODI score against Ireland.
On the bowling front, Ireland struggled to stem the run flow. Josh Little (2/89) was expensive, but chipped in with crucial wickets, including that of the dangerous Motie. Barry McCarthy also picked up two wickets but conceded 68 runs in his 10 overs, while George Dockrell (1/36) and Thomas Mayes (0/49) toiled without much success.
Unfortunately, the much-anticipated chase never commenced. Persistent rain set in during the innings break and refused to relent, forcing officials to call off the match without a single ball bowled in Ireland’s innings. The “No Result” was a disappointing outcome for fans and players alike, especially after such an electrifying batting display from the Caribbean side.
This result means the three-match series remains alive, with West Indies leading 1-0 after their win in the first ODI. The third and final encounter, set for May 25, now becomes a potential series decider, weather permitting. For West Indies, the standout performance of Carty — registering his maiden international century — will be seen as a huge positive, alongside the emergence of Matthew Forde as a genuine finisher in the lower order. Ireland, meanwhile, will hope their bowlers can regroup and their batters will get an opportunity to respond in the decider.
