Alright, cricket fans, here’s the situation: The Bangladesh T20I team is marching on to the field in Pallekele looking to resolve some of the headaches they have had in the recent past. The Tigers have endured a rough patch recently, losing the ODI series 2-1 to Sri Lanka, and followed it up with a series of five T20I losses in a row. Seizing this opportunity is vital for the Tigers to get their winning momentum back. Is the change in setup and format enough to get the Tigers the momentum they need? Let’s see.
Fresh Faces, Fresh Hope?
Bangladesh’s selectors had decisions to make. Mohammad Naim and Mohammad Saifuddin have been brought back in, replacing Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar. Naim hasn’t even got on the field yet, while Saifuddin’s selection surely means difficult decisions were made — maybe even leaving out all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has been a consistent contributor. It can go either way — infuse some new energy or disrupt the balance of the team; only time will tell.
A positive: Bangladesh’s combination of openers is an area of recent strength for the side, showing they can be influential in turning the momentum in Bangladesh. With Litton Das and Tawhid Hridoy struggling further down the order, if the openers can continue their strong performances, the team will have the base to solidify their chances.
Pitch, Conditions, and Mental Battles
Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is known for big scores – a batting paradise if you will. Unfortunately, Bangladesh’s recent visits to this ground have been far from fruitful; they have lost all three T20Is to date at this venue, and have only managed three wins in ten T20Is in Sri Lanka overall. However, against the Sri Lankan home team, Bangladesh have exceeded expectations, having won three Read more than/fewer than fives out of the five they’ve faced, so there is a small psychological edge to leverage.
However, Sri Lanka losing Wanindu Hasaranga to a hamstring injury was a significant loss for the visitors, and should relieve some of the pressure from Bangladesh’s batters. In a way, it becomes a challenge for Bangladesh’s spin department to fill the void caused by Hasaranga’s being out. Rishad Hossain is expected to fill that void; however, given his last two outings were expensive, there may have been some thinking of bringing Nasum Ahmed to create some control. To top that off, Shak Mahedi is not in great form, which creates a challenge for the Bangladeshi Tigers to limit runs off Sri Lanka’s batters.
Pace, Power, and Finishing Fireworks
Bangladesh’s pace attack gets a significant boost with Taskin Ahmed returning, after missing the last couple of series. The pace spearhead is back to lead Bangladesh’s charge against Sri Lanka’s batting lineup. Taskin is expected to deliver crucial early wickets and restrict the opposition’s run flow for Bangladesh.
At the same time, I will keep tabs on Jaker Ali because he has provided the energy in the Bangladesh batting lineup as of late with his high-impact finishing. He will be under pressure to come up with the fireworks when the team needs him in the more difficult moments. In contrast, there is concern regarding Shamim Hossain’s recent dip in form (seven straight scores of zero to nine). If the middle order doesn’t come together, who knows if the rest would be able to do enough!
