When you combine a hot batting line-up with a milestone moment and an IPL match, you get an absolute cracker of a match. Not only did GT win by a convincing 38 runs in the balanced performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, but they also produced a milestone-filled contest that had fans buzzing about leaving the stadium. And if you just count the innings with record performances and individual milestones, regardless, it was a night like no other. Let’s take a look at the five biggest moments that made this one for the ages.
Fastest 2000 T20 and 1500 IPL Runs
Sai Sudarshan
It’s safe to say that Sai Sudarshan is officially no longer under the radar. The classy left-hander has been racking up runs consistently, but towards SRH, he will go down in the record books twice. To begin with, he is the fastest Indian to surpass the 2000 T20 runs mark, doing so in 54 innings, breaking the record previously held by the Great Sachin Tendulkar, in 59 innings.
He displayed flair, had intent, and maturity when he scored 48 off 23 balls. Sudarshan is displaying every time he bats that he is not just another one-season wonder; he is the real deal, and GT has a superstar at the top.
Jos Buttler Hits 4000 IPL Runs
Jos Buttler
Every IPL team wants a match-winner like Jos Buttler. He may have just missed out on a century today, but he showed with his 64 runs off 37 balls that he has a dangerous proposition. Buttler also achieved a personal milestone today, alright, as he went past the 4000-run mark in the IPL, meaning he is now the 18th cricketer to achieve that milestone.
The Englishman’s innings was impressive – it was vintage Buttler: super-aggressive but also calm; powerful yet precise. He scored the majority of his runs with three fours and four sixes, partnering with Shubman Gill to take the men in blue to an impressive score of 224/6. At the rate Buttler is going, if it doesn’t happen after the match today, I won’t be surprised if he finishes with yet another 1,000 or so runs before the end of the season.
Abhishek Climbing the Charts with Every Six
Abhishek Sharma
While the outcome did not favour SRH, Abhishek Sharma gave the fans something to remember him by with a blistering 74 off 41 balls. The left-handed swashbuckler hit six sixes to continue expanding his envelope of being one of the cleanest hitters in the game.
This knock meant he now has six innings in the IPL that qualified him in terms of six or more sixes, as the second-highest among Indian batters, behind only Sanju Samson with eight. Abhishek’s rise as an unquestionable power-hitter is leaving jaws dropping already, and it is evident that he is not just a cameo player; he is now becoming a match-winner unto himself.
Prasidh Krishna Joins the 100-Wicket Club
Prasidh Krishna
Let’s not forget about the bowlers! His 4 overs of 2/19 were sharp, disciplined, and effective, exactly what GT required in the defence of such a huge score. Prasidh can bowl 10 dot balls and only give up 1 boundary, and that is why he is one of the most underrated T20 bowlers that India has, and why he remains a key weapon in GT’s bowling arsenal. He is best at consistency and control, and it is an enormous testament to his impact and role across formats that he has achieved the milestone of 100 wickets at T20 level.
