The IPL 2025 Eliminator delivered all of the savory delights we expect from the tournament – runs for fun, jaw-dropping sixes, star quality, and drama. And yet on top of Mumbai Indians’ professional but emphatic 20-run win over Gujarat Titans, it was a night of milestones and mayhem. From Rohit Sharma putting on a clinic of the past, to Rashid Khan experiencing a monumental low, this was much more than a knockout elimination – it was a landmark game. And, if you happened to miss it, don’t be sad – here are four milestones that made this battle unforgettable.
Rohit Sharma Hits 7000 IPL Runs (And That’s Not All)
When Rohit Sharma is in form. He has a sort of calm, calculated destruction about him. There’s no slogging, just pure class. And, in this Eliminator, he was doing more than just trying to keep MI alive. He was writing history.
Rohit’s 81 off 50 was his best IPL playoff score and helped him become only the second player after Virat Kohli to cross 7000 IPL runs, totaling 7038 in 271 matches with 2 hundred and 47 fifties.
Oh, and while we are on the matter of milestones, he also smashed his 300th IPL six. Now with 302 sixes, he is only behind Chris Gayle. Virat will likely follow with 291. But for now, Rohit is the king – yet again.
Suryakumar Yadav Breaks Sachin’s Record Like It’s No Big Deal
“Mr. 360” Suryakumar Yadav hammered a sharp 33 off 20, not just boosting MI’s innings but also breaking a big record—most 30-plus scores in a season for MI, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s mark with his 11th.
That’s 11 instances where Surya has passed 30 runs this season, surpassing the great Sachin Tendulkar’s total of 10. That is not just consistency – that is next-level reliability. For a team that often rides waves of momentum, Surya is the rock amidst the mayhem.
Surya’s mix of stabilizing, accelerating, and adjusting to circumstances has made him MI’s most valuable batter this season. No questions asked.
Rashid Khan’s Record No Bowler Wants to Own
Sadly, not all records are one’s people want to celebrate. Rashid Khan, one of the most highly regarded spinners in world cricket, had one of those nights—and the kind of IPL season he would probably rather delete.
In this Eliminator, Rashid officially became the bowler who has now given up the greatest number of sixes in an individual IPL season—33 in total, beating Mohammed Siraj’s 31 from IPL 2022. A rough figure for someone renowned for his economy and wicket-taking.
To be fair, Rashid was bowling to batters like Rohit, Surya, and Bairstow, and on a batting-friendly wicket. But still, for a bowler of his stature, that is a painful fall from grace. Whether it’s one bad day in the office or just a case of teams figuring him out—it’s a figure he will want to forget—and quickly.
MI’s Momentum Is Peaking at the Perfect Time
If we’ve learned anything from previous IPL seasons, it is this: don’t ever write MI off. They’re a successful IPL franchise for a reason. This Eliminator demonstrated that when their big players come to the party, they’re virtually undefeated.
The form of Rohit and Suryakumar, combined with Bairstow’s assertiveness and a bowling unit that is capable of defending a large total, made MI a formidable opponent going into Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings. And as an added wrinkle, RCB is waiting in the final with their storyline of redemption to tell.
With milestones falling and their lead marksmen finding their form, MI may just be starting to warm up for another title run. In MI’s high-octane win over GT, we witnessed legends solidifying their legacy, milestones (good and bad) being broken, and all the setup for something great.
Can MI maintain this form to lift the IPL 2025 trophy? Or, will it be someone else’s turn to surprise us all in the next game? What do you think?
