IND vs ENG (5th Test) – Highlights
In one of the most exciting finishes to a Test match in recent times, IND held their nerve to defeat ENG by 6 runs in the 5th and final Test at The Oval. India sealed the series like a master calligrapher finishing a scroll—bold, precise, and with a final flourish on a thrilling last day.
The scoreboard groaned as India’s top order played musical chairs with the pavilion, folding for a modest 224. England’s pace sensation Gus Atkinson was lethal with the ball, taking a five-wicket haul (5 for 33), while Josh Tongue chipped in with three wickets. Karun Nair (57) and Sai Sudharsan (38) were the only notable contributors in a batting order that failed to build substantial partnerships.
ENG looked poised for a big lead in response, as openers Crawley and Duckett gave them a flying start. Despite missing Chris Woakes due to injury, England still posted 247, with Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj sharing eight wickets between them and pulling India back into the contest.
India’s second innings proved to be the defining passage of the match. Yashasvi Jaiswal anchored the innings with a composed 118, displaying class and maturity against a hostile English attack. But it was Akash Deep who turned heads with an unexpected 66 while batting at No. 4 as a nightwatchman. Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja added crucial half-centuries down the order, pushing India to 396. Josh Tongue continued his impressive run, bagging a five-wicket haul, making it ten wickets in the match.
Set a daunting target of 374, England began their chase cautiously. Despite early losses, Joe Root and Harry Brook looked set to take the game away from India with a brilliant 195-run partnership. Root’s measured 105 laid the foundation, while Brook shifted the momentum with an aggressive 111 off 98 balls. At 301 for 3, England seemed to be coasting to victory. But cricket has its scriptwriters.
Prasidh Krishna broke the stand by dismissing Brook, and from there, the floodgates opened. Siraj was already causing trouble, but when he came back for another spell, he finished the job—snagging 5 for 104 by wiping out the tail. Prasidh Krishna supported him with 4 for 126, and England, chasing 374, fell just 6 runs short, bowled out for 367.
This Test had it all—early collapses, brave counter-attacks, a tail-end fight, and a thrilling finish. While England fought hard, it was India’s resilience, especially with the bat in the second innings and their fast bowling depth, that eventually tilted the game in their favor.
