The Rockets, having lost their last two matches due to poor run chases, posted a formidable 166 for 4. Tom Banton and Joe Root provided solid support for Hales with aggressive batting of their own.
Hales, who hadn’t scored more than 38 in his last 11 innings, found his form as the Rockets added 93 runs in the second half of their innings. A brief scare came when Hales was hit by a beamer from Nathan Ellis.
In his innings of 36 from 25 balls, Banton laid a strong foundation, while Root’s experience helped ensure a strong finish with his 32 from 23 balls.
Afghan leg-spinner Rashid Khan made an immediate impact, finishing with figures of 4 for 24. Spirit captain Dan Lawrence tried to attack Rashid early but ended up being caught by Rovman Powell off Rashid’s second ball. Shimron Hetmyer was then out lbw on review from the next delivery.
Keaton Jennings scored 31 from 18 balls but was caught out trying a reverse sweep off Rashid, who again displayed the qualities that make him a star in white-ball cricket.

As the tension rose, Luke Wood bowled a slower ball that stayed low and hit Russell’s off stump.
