Let’s be honest: cricket fans are not so frivolous with names like Wasim Akram. He transcended fast bowling for a generation. But then, now and then, a player comes along and makes you reconsider the entire notion of fast bowling. Enter Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah, with his unique action, immaculate accuracy, and freakish talent to swing the ball both ways, is not simply rewriting records. Burke is rewriting the records of fast bowling as we knew them. And if you watched India’s recent Test against England, you know exactly what we are talking about.
Bumrah vs Wasim: The Numbers Don’t Lie
It may appear to be wrong to compare anyone to Wasim Akram, but the numbers are starting to do that. Akram has his 414 wickets in 104 Tests, and while Bumrah is yet to assume that pace, it would appear he is removing records like it were a deadline.
Think about the method to the chaos; that is why Bumrah is unique. He is not just bowling on perfect Indian wickets; it is 12 overseas, five-fers which equal Kapil Dev? This is not flat-track bullying – this is annihilation in swinging, seaming, and flaky conditions.
The Genius in Bumrah’s Simplicity
As a wise Varun Aaron put it—”Bumrah makes everyone look almost average.” It’s not about the skills, it’s about the brain. Every single ball goes through this supercomputer! On a day when Inswing wasn’t his ball (which in this case it wasn’t), he could pivot to the out-swing and still control the game!
That is what makes Bumrah mentally sharp. Some have a little swing, but how many know what to bowl, when? How many can pick up a batter’s foot movement in the middle of an over and change length like a surgeon? Bumrah can. That’s the difference between being a good bowler and being a bowler’s nightmare.
And what about his calmness! Lots and lots of more ordinary bowlers would have been nuts. Bumrah?
Bumrah’s Action: A Weapon of Mass Confusion
Let’s discuss mechanics now. Bumrah’s hyperextension, as Aaron talked about, gives Bumrah an advantage that the majority of bowlers can’t copy. His arm will come over quicker than you expect, the ball is zipping through the deck, and before the batter knows it- bang- top of off gone.
And because of that unique release, even the smallest movement off the pitch is a weapon. Where others rely on conditions, Bumrah makes them. The amount of deviation off the pitch by Bumrah is often the highest of any game he plays. That’s not science, that’s witchcraft.
And let’s not overlook his dead-eyed accuracy. Bumrah doesn’t just bowl—he interrogates the batter, over and over, with the same probing line. He’s not out there spraying it around and crossing fingers. He hunts with precision, testing the same spot like a lie detector. If a batter blinks, even once, Bumrah’s already inside their head.
Jasprit Bumrah is not only a world-class fast bowler; he conceivably could be the best fast bowler of our era. Wasim Akram’s legacy will always be sacrosanct, but we must all begin to accept the possibility that Bumrah has now joined Akram in ranking… if he already isn’t ahead of him.
Here’s something to think about – if Bumrah is this standard for five years, is he the best fast bowler of this generation? Or if he is already the best fast bowler, are we just trying to catch up?
