If you could get wicketkeeping advice from either MS Dhoni or Adam Gilchrist, who would you choose?
Tough one, right?
For most cricket fans, it’s like choosing between pizza and biryani — both legendary in their way. But Australian superstar Alyssa Healy recently made her pick, and she went with Dhoni. The twist? It’s not because she thinks he’s better than Gilly… It’s because she’s never actually spoken to him about keeping tips before. And sometimes, cricket — like life is all about trying something new.
When Legends Collide: Dhoni vs Gilchrist in the Keeping World
These two are at the top of the list when it comes to wicketkeeper hall of fame inductees. Gilchrist – the Aussie giant – was the first “keeper” that, in my opinion, stopped being a “keeper” in the traditional sense – he was a savage first-choice batter, and someone who was a handy keeper.
Dhoni, on the other hand, had his magic, made up of a combination of incredibly fast stumpings, a cool demeanor, and his coolness in being able to accomplish the impossible when he needed to. His 829 international dismissals (634 catches + 195 stumpings) might not top Gilly’s tally, but the story they tell is in a league of its own.
Healy admitted she’s already “exhausted” from her Gilchrist conversations. So, for her, the intrigue lies in Dhoni’s unique approach — from his unconventional techniques to his sharp cricketing instincts. And honestly, who wouldn’t want a masterclass from Captain Cool himself?
What Makes Dhoni’s Wicketkeeping Advice Worth Gold
The thing about Dhoni is — he doesn’t just catch the ball; he understands the game like a chess grandmaster. His advice, while not always ‘by the book,’ is part of the fun.
Take his stumping style. Most keepers collect the ball before whipping off the bales. Dhoni? He’s already halfway into the stumping motion as the ball reaches him. It’s pure anticipation mixed with insane hand speed. That’s the kind of thing you can’t fully learn from a manual — you need the man himself to break it down.
And don’t forget about his calmness under pressure! I mean, whether it’s a World Cup final or a nail-biter in an IPL game, Dhoni rarely looks rattled! For a keeper who is so involved in the game and constantly a target for the opposition’s best-played moves, keeping calm is just as important as taking the catch! I think she would get that Dhoni calmness, I know she has always been known for her fearless approach!
Dhoni’s Future and Why This Advice Window Might Be Short
There’s also the timing factor. Dhoni is still around the game, but nobody knows how much longer he’ll be active — at least as a player. In IPL 2025, he even stepped in as captain when Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured, but CSK had a forgettable season, finishing last with just four wins in 14 matches.
Dhoni has now officially stated he and CSK will be “together for the next 15-20 years” — although he poked fun at himself in claiming he will still play in that time. However, once Dhoni stops playing, personal sessions like these will become a thing of the past. After all, to get inside Dhoni’s cricket brain now means to unlock an extraordinary trove of knowledge gained from decades of experience before it’s relegated to cricket history.
Healy’s decision is not so much about weighing up conventional against unconventional; it’s just a part of the mix. Gilchrist has already had a huge influence on her game, but perhaps trying to learn from the awkward, unconventional genius that is Dhoni in its entirety may provide a new perspective.
