Two fixture blocks decide it: Australia against New Zealand in the home summer, and the five-Test trip to India that follows. South Africa’s 176-run victory at Cape Town on the last day of October sealed a 2-1 series win and moved them to 71.43 PCT, second behind New Zealand on 72.22, with Australia third on 69.23. Only the top two earn a place in the decider at The Oval, 9-13 June 2027, so every point from here is fought over by three sides, with India chasing.

Cape Town reshuffled the top three

Australia arrived in Cape Town as table-toppers on 75.00 PCT, while South Africa lay third with 66.67. The defeat cost Australia 5.77 points and handed South Africa 4.76. New Zealand now sit first on 72.22 from only six Tests played, which flatters them, because ten more are to come. No side has a higher ceiling than their 89.58.

That leaves a table where one result can swing a side by several points. South Africa trail the leaders by a sliver and are just over two points clear of Australia. Pakistan, on 4.63, are the outlier at the bottom, and the middle of the table has already stopped mattering for the final.

Mapping the WTC 2027 final race remaining series

Every one of Australia’s nine outstanding Tests is against a rival for a final berth. Four come at home against New Zealand between 9 December and 8 January, and five follow on Indian soil between 21 January and 3 March. India then meet New Zealand twice from 19 November. South Africa face Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka across seven Tests, which keeps their fate in their own hands.

The last column assumes every Test still to come is won with no further penalties. That is my own calculation, not an official figure, and it rests on the schedule as it stood in late October, adjusted for completed matches. It tells you who can still afford a stumble and who cannot.

India’s narrow route back

Fourth place on 51.52 gives India seven Tests to rescue their campaign, two in New Zealand and five against Australia. Winning all seven lifts them to 70.37, the best they can manage. South Africa already sits above that figure today, so India needs others to slip. Six wins and a draw would only reach 66.67.

A series win in New Zealand pays twice, adding points for India while taking them from a direct rival. Even so, their chance of qualifying was rated at just 3% in late October. The odds say Australia and New Zealand must hurt each other first, and the Indian batters then have to deliver in Australia’s backyard.

Australia and New Zealand face the sternest tests

Australia’s hardest assignment is the home series against New Zealand, followed by those five Tests in India. Their ceiling of 81.82 sits below both South Africa’s and New Zealand’s, so they cannot afford many slips. A single lost Test in either block could end the dream, because the leaders will not wait for them.

New Zealand played those four in Australia, then hosted India twice. The remaining four fixtures, against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, should bring points. If they survive Australia’s summer, their schedule is the kindest of the three leaders, and that is why they hold the highest ceiling.

Sides already eliminated or close to it

The match has already finished between Pakistan and West Indies. Pakistan’s ceiling is 33.97 across four Tests, and West Indies can only reach 32.14 from one. England’s ceiling of 53.17 and Sri Lanka’s 66.67 leave them with chances rated at 0.1% and 0.2%, which is as good as nothing.

Bangladesh, capped at 69.44, were rated at 3%. So the WTC 2027 final race remaining series that count are Australia against New Zealand and India against Australia, with South Africa’s own fixtures the only comfort for any leader.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where do the teams stand in the WTC table after the Cape Town result?

New Zealand lead on 72.22 PCT, South Africa follow on 71.43, and Australia sit third on 69.23. India hold fourth place with 51.52, and Pakistan bring up the rear on 4.63.

Which two teams are likely to reach the WTC 2027 final?

That is undecided, because the top two sides on PCT reach the final. New Zealand and South Africa hold those places now, with Australia within three points.

What is the venue for the 2027 World Test Championship final?

The final is scheduled for The Oval in London. It runs between 9 and 13 June 2027, a gap of more than three months after Australia’s tour of India finishes on 3 March.

Does India have any chance of making the 2027 Test championship decider?

Yes, but only on the narrowest of margins. Winning all seven Tests they have left would lift them to 70.37 PCT, and even that would still need help from other results.

Which countries have no realistic hope of playing in the 2027 Test championship decider?

Pakistan and West Indies are effectively out. Pakistan’s best case is 33.97 and West Indies’ is 32.14, while England and Sri Lanka are given slim odds.
