Cricket is more than just a sport in India–it is a sentiment. And if you couple that with another Indian sentiment-music-you get a fantastic mix. This has been true for many years, both when we have seen our favorite cricketers hitting sixes on the field, then turning around and hitting some very nice tunes in their videos. Whether it be for fun, a passion, or an undiscovered talent ready to explore, these cricketers have committed themselves to making some beats and have done so with the best swag, for their fans to enjoy.
Harbhajan Singh
Before cricket crossovers were even “cool,” Harbhajan Singh was making noise – literally. The Turbanator didn’t stop at being lethal on the pitch with his spin, he made noise in 2013 with ‘Ek Suneha’ music track, which was a striking call to Punjabi music that had misrepresented culture. Then, in the same year, Bhajji dropped another heartfelt music track, ‘Meri Maa’, with his mother in the music video. It was not about star power or celebrity – it was personal. Once again, Harbhajan proved his skills extended beyond spinning balls, he was spinning feelings into melodies.
Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina is recognized for his outstanding skill of timing the ball, which is beautiful; who knows, he could also time musical notes as beautifully as he does a ball? And, as you can expect, this was not a one-off; Raina followed it up with another single called ‘Bitiya Rani’ in which Raina pays heartfelt tribute to all daughters. So, once he steps off the field, Raina is a man with many moods, and his musical foray shows the soft, emotional side of the southpaw cricketer that we all admired during numerous run chases.
Riyan Parag & Tushar Deshpande
Now, here’s a crossover we did not know we were waiting to see: global pop star Ed Sheeran with Indian cricketers, Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande, in the same frame. This was during Sheeran’s recent India tour, where he was filming his latest track ‘Sapphire’—a pure visual treat that was not only filmed in India, but also had that Rajasthan Royals vibe to it. Sheeran even wore his RR jersey, and while seeing some parts of the Brijesh Patel Cricket Academy, conducted an entertaining cricket session with Parag and Deshpande. It was not your usual music video cameo, but a reflection of how modern-day cricketers are becoming pop culture icons in all forms of greatness.
Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan has always been the spirit of the dressing room, so it was only a matter of time before his dance moves and personality reached a music video. When it did, it was epic. The video was drenched in charisma and style, and Dhawan’s cowboy look stole hearts (and memories). The song has received more than 100 million views, proving that Shikhar Dhawan could easily balance cricket with charisma.
Virat Kohli
He’s a consistency king, heart of RCB, marketing machine, and now Virat Kohli has also dabbled in music videos when he appeared in ‘The Flame’—a song by AB de Villiers released in 2020. The song was initiated to spread some positivity during tough times, and included a gathering of cricket’s elite names like Yuzvendra Chahal, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, and Chris Morris. Sometimes it’s not about who is singing, it’s spending time together, as it were, for a cause.
The next time you see a cricketer trending—not for a match-winning knock, but for a new music release—don’t be too surprised; you may just be looking at the next crossover king of cricket. Which cricketer do you want to see do a music video next, and why?
