The IPL may be finished, but there is no time to wait because Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 will soon be giving us more T20 thrill! MLC starts on June 12 and concludes with a final on July 13, featuring six franchises competing across the US for T20 Championship glory! With new twists and turns taking place this year, with squad changes and surprise omissions that teams will look to capitalize on to create new narratives, and all the drama that goes along with that! So, who looks poised for success, and who is destined to flop again?
LA Knight Riders: Big Guns, Big Hopes
The Los Angeles Knight Riders are set to stop talking and hopefully start winning after two disappointing seasons. Under captain Jason Holder, they have a squad full of T20 match-winners — Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Rovman Powell, Alex Hales, Anrich Nortje, Tanveer Sangha, just to name a few.
And this isn’t just a squad full of hype — there’s real balance and serious firepower. If LAKR can finally fire as one unit, they could be hoisting the trophy as soon as July.
Washington Freedom: Still Strong, Still Dangerous
The Washington Freedom, last year’s champions, are going to keep a bulk of the group together. The loss of Travis Head is unfortunate, and Steve Smith’s availability only in brief stints is a setback as well. But Washington Freedom has Glenn Maxwell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and a fast bowling group that has some teeth with Lockie Ferguson and Jason Behrendorff, and they will have the parts to make a long run.
The area that they are not strong in is spin, but surely, with three part-time spinners in Maxwell, Ravindra, and Phillips, they will have enough to make it through. Don’t count them out for consecutive titles.
San Francisco Unicorns: Talented but Unsettled
The Unicorns have a nice base—Corey Anderson has a group of batters who can unleash thier potential, and batters such as Finn Allen, Fraser-McGurk, and Matthew Short are the type of batters with the potential to go nuts. They have Hassan Khan, Xavier Bartlett, and the already recognized Haris Rauf as some of their other bowling options.
Their main worry is a lack of depth in spin options. With such high-caliber batting, the Unicorns could well make the playoffs, but looking to win the whole thing might rely on the bowlers stepping up.
Texas Super Kings: Dependable but Lacking Punch
TSK seems like a pretty safe option: never bad, but never exceptional. Under Faf du Plessis’ captaincy, and with Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell, the batting is experienced but not explosive. The late withdrawal of Mitchell Marsh is a blow.
There is some power with the bowling attack (Adam Milne, Noor Ahmad, and Akeal Hosein), but they do not have that special player who can win games single-handedly. Steady ride ahead, finals might be pushing it.
MI New York: Stars Without Support?
MINY does have some big names-Nicholas Pooran, Quinton De Kock, Kieron Pollard, and Trent Boult- but that seems to be where depth ends. Michael Bracewell and George Linde provide good value, but without Rashid Khan and Omarzai, then, surely, the bowling firepower begins to fade.
They can make the playoffs if all goes well, but they need every veteran to fire-because the bench looks rather worrying thin!
Seattle Orcas: Top-Heavy and Vulnerable
After a rough 2024, Seattle may have another rough ride ahead of it. Klaasen and Warner are the batting cornerstones, and Hetmyer and Sikandar Raza provide some additional support, but clearly the team has little depth in each department.
The bowling line-up, though led by Farooqi, McCoy, and Raza, feels shaky, and we can expect little in terms of back-ups. Unless the stars can deliver match after match, it looks like it’s going to be a more wooden spoon year for the Orcas.
