Adam Jumper’s single out recently sparked controversy. Such an out is commonly called mankading. However, the third umpire did not give out. Now, after the controversial incident, MCC has added a new subsection to the law. The MCC has also clarified through this subsection when a batsman is considered to be out.
Recently, a controversy was created about a match of Big Bash. Stars and Renegades face each other in the match. In the match, Stars bowler Adam Zampa ran out Tom Rogers who was on a non-strike. But after seeing the replay, the third umpire called not out. Such an out is usually called mankading. And Mankading is recognized in the ICC Rules. Now the debate is about why the umpire did not give out? .
After this incident, MCC gave an explanation for not out. After watching the replay, the reason for not out was that Zampa brought down his hand the moment the ball left his hand. According to the rules, a bowler can only dismiss a batsman if he leaves the crease before the bowler’s hands reach the point of release. And the reason for not giving out in the match, although Rodgers left the crease earlier, Zampa went to the point of release of the ball.
This sub-section has now been added to section 2 of MCC 38.3. It states that if the non-striker batsman leaves the crease before the moment the bowler is normally expected to deliver the ball, he cannot be run out under this law. Mankading out has been debated before. After the Jumper incident, it seemed to have more wind in its sails.
Cricket’s legislative body also stated that the addition of this subsection ‘does not constitute a material change in legal meaning’. This trend was already there. But some terminological ambiguities have been clarified. Regarding the issue of law, MCC said, this law is already clear to the players and umpires. However, some wording caused ambiguity. Now in Section 38.3 the matter is made more clear.
