It is a dramatic calm before a storm as Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchises submit their retention lists. The news isn’t about who is coming in but rather the big-name players who are going out. Each one, Deepti Sharma, Meg Lanning, Sophie Ecclestone, and Amelia Kerr, has already demonstrated she can win matches, and all appear headed for the exit. This serves as a harsh reality check that while the WPL was once an elite club of high-profile stars, it is now a deliberate chessboard where strategic decision-making takes precedence over emotional decision-making. Given the rule that teams can retain at most five players from their rosters, including caps on how many international players can be retained, teams have been forced to make some very tough decisions.

Mumbai Indians Betting on Youthful Dynamism

Mumbai Indians are likely to retain young players such as G Kamlini (wicket keeper/ batter) and Amanjot Kaur (all-rounder), which represents a major commitment to the young talent in cricket. However, retaining them along with experienced players, such as Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews, and Nat Sciver Brunt, will allow MI to create an entirely new form of team – that of unproven yet talented youth paired with the experience and temperaments of proven match performers. In the past, Mumbai has been very successful at finding and developing young Indian cricketers before the start of each season; for example, the way they developed young Indian fast bowlers and all-round spinners at the beginning of their IPL campaign.

Delhi Capitals: Experience Over Emotion

The decision to release Meg Lanning, the captain of the Delhi Capitals, who was able to qualify for the finals three years in a row, is perhaps the most surprising in the history of the WPL. However, there is logic behind releasing her. By retaining both Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp, the team has maintained its round-the-clock power source. In addition to maintaining its overall batting prowess with Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma, it has also added some young talent with the inclusion of Niki Prasad, indicating that the team will have a long-term development plan. The strategy employed by Delhi Capitals is indicative of historical trends in franchise-style cricket, where even highly successful captains can be released in order to ensure that the squads have the strategic flexibility to win games.

Gujarat Giants: A Bold Foreign-First Strategy

The Gujarat Giants are considering retaining no Indian players to purchase 2 overseas players. This is a risk/reward strategy, and while it gives them an immediate advantage by adding two top international players to their roster, it also creates potential problems for the team’s depth and bench. There have been instances of teams using this same approach in other global T-20 leagues, such as many of the early-season IPL teams who invested too heavily in the signing of foreign players at the expense of building solid domestic rosters. The Giants will decide to see if a team with a core of foreign players can consistently perform better than a more well-rounded team in the WPL, where local stars have historically decided games when they are close.

RCB’s Retention: Balancing Prestige and Pragmatism

Royal Challengers Bengaluru — the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) Champions — will likely keep only 4 of their top players: Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry, Shreyanka Patil, and Richa Ghosh. While retaining only 4 players from an extremely talented roster is very few for a franchise that has such tremendous talent, it shows a thoughtful strategy of “pruning” or not getting too invested in the success of last year’s players. This example clearly shows a current trend in WPL franchising; they are being very intentional about combining the attraction of high-profile (marquee) players with the flexibility to be able to select from many other players via auctions, which allows them to have the ability to quickly adapt to the ever-changing landscape of their competitive league. As with any sports league, the failure to strategically compose a solid lineup may put your title aspirations at risk.
