Have you ever seen a teenage cricketer light up a cricket field like a cartoon character riding in cheat mode in a video game? Well, that’s exactly what India’s 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi just did in the U-19 ODI series against England. While most kids are figuring out how to solve for x, this left-handed slugger is busy changing the record books of cricket. Sure, the 52-ball ton in the fourth Youth ODI is already spinning the world, but more importantly, he is now atop a very elite list—the fastest hundreds in U-19 ODI history.
The 14-Year-Old Phenomenon Who Redefined Fast Scoring
Let’s start at the bottom of the list, starting with the king at the bottom of the list. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the youngest on this list, not only scored a century at 14 years of age, he obliterated the bowling attack. On the opening day of the second ODI vs England U-19, Suryavanshi had 52 runs from only 38 balls. In his innings again opening for India U-19 and looking completely untroubled, he managed to score 143 runs from 78 balls, which included 13 fours and ten monster sixes. This inning was not just dominance, it was destruction!
But this isn’t just a once-off occurrence. Suryavanshi has been teasing us with his potential with brutal knocks throughout the series – a 19-ball 48, a 45 of 22 balls, and then 86 of 31 balls in the third game. It was always just a matter of time before he got into three figures. What is special is the maturity behind the madness – he even controls the tempo of the innings like a senior player in the IPL and switches gears at will.
Ghulam’s 53-Ball Masterpiece
Long before Vaibhav stole the spotlight, it was Kamran Ghulam’s 53-ball blaze that ruled the U-19 record books for over a decade. His hundred, which came in 53 balls against England U-19 in 2013 was explosive, underrated, and let’s be honest, a little ahead of its time.
Kamran walked out to bat at number six with a different type of pressure, lower middle-order, needed quick runs, and could not waste time doing it. And he delivered… a not-out 102 off 56 balls with nine fours and seven sixes, at a strike rate of 182+. He turned a mediocre total into a statement win and demonstrated how powerful a finisher can be even in youth cricket.
Kamran might not have the global star power of some of his peers, but this innings is still a template for late-order chaos in limited-overs cricket, and a reminder that you don’t always need to occupy an opening role to perform; all you need is guts, accuracy, and a very fast bat.
Tamim Iqbal’s 68-ball Classic
Before establishing himself in the cricketing fraternity as Bangladesh’s aggressive opener, Tamim Iqbal made an impression in youth cricket through a fine innings way back in 2005. Fast forward to 2006, the stylish batter accomplished a century off 68 balls whilst playing for Bangladesh U-19 against England U-19 in a tri-nation U-19 match long before the aggressive openers we see today were commonplace rather than the exception.
When Tamim walked into bat chasing a small target of 174, he didn’t just stabilize the innings – he completely took apart the England bowling attack with 13 fours and 6 sixes. He scored 112 in 71 balls. Tamim’s style was fearless, purposeful, and loud; exactly how he has managed to play his entire career for Bangladesh.
Tamim’s innings were not just fast – it was a representation. It illustrated the arrival of an entirely new Bangladeshi batter who is aggressive, confident, and potentially fearful of no cricketing nation.
