By respecting Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer rather than attacking them blindly. Australia lost the one-day series 2-1, with South Africa’s slow bowlers taking a dozen wickets while conceding 5.05 an over. The Test starts on 9 October at Kingsmead, and Nic Maddinson’s recall suggests the selectors want a specialist against turn. Maharaj and Harmer will both play, so Australia face a genuine two-spinner examination on day one. Whether that is enough depends on how the top six rebuild after those one-day collapses.
Kingsmead Collapse Set the Tone
The warning came on 24 September at Kingsmead, where Australia raced to 90 without loss and were then folded for 230 after 41.2 overs. Maharaj took 4-20 from 9.2 overs and Fortuin 2-34, so the two slow bowlers shared six wickets for 54 across 17.2 overs. South Africa won by 67 runs.
Three days later at the Wanderers, the spinners claimed five more for 179 in 30 overs as Australia reached 333 and still lost by 32. The tourists took the third match at Potchefstroom by 45 runs on DLS, but Maharaj sat that one out. Marsh fell to spin in each of the three games, a worrying pattern for the Tests.
Batter | Dismissals | Bowlers |
Marsh | 3 | Maharaj, Fortuin twice |
Green | 2 | Maharaj, Fortuin |
Head | 1 | Markram |
Carey | 1 | Maharaj |
Renshaw | 1 | Maharaj |
Connolly | 1 | Fortuin |
Inglis | 1 | Fortuin |
Edwards | 1 | Maharaj |
Zampa | 1 | Maharaj |
South Africa vs Australia Test series 2026 spin
Maharaj arrives with a strong record against this opposition: 22 wickets in nine Tests, conceding 994 runs at an economy of 3.36. He has removed Steve Smith four times in Tests, more than any spinner outside Asia, and he took nine wickets in a Durban match in 2018. Across all Tests, he has 218 wickets at under 30.
Harmer is the quieter threat. Since his 2022 comeback, he has taken 18 wickets at 16.94 over nine Tests, three of them alongside Maharaj at home. In April 2022 at Kingsmead, the pair accounted for Bangladesh’s entire innings inside 19 overs, and four of the ground’s leading eight first-class wicket-takers this decade are left-arm spinners. Maharaj has also dismissed Carey three times at an average of 17.
Spinner | ODI 1 | ODI 2 | ODI 3 | Total |
Maharaj | 4 | 2 | Absent | 6 |
Fortuin | 2 | 2 | 1 | 5 |
Zampa | 2 | 0 | 2 | 4 |
Markram | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
Maddinson Brings a Gamble
Nic Maddinson was recalled after Josh Inglis fractured a finger, his first Test call since 2016. The selectors point to his record against spin: 47.97 at first-class level and 52.37 across Shield matches between December 2018 and March 2024. Bailey rates him highly against turn and simply the best fit.
The risk is match fitness. He has not played a first-class game for 19 months, though he captains NSW, and his Test record offers little to lean on. Number five is a straight choice between him and Cooper Connolly, who bowls spin himself, with Cameron Green ruled out injured.
Lyon Stands Alone in the Attack
Lyon should be Australia’s lone frontline spinner. Kuhnemann is the obvious second option, but picking him likely means leaving out Hazlewood or Boland, and Andrew McDonald has said the argument must be very persuasive before Australia go with two spinners.
Cover comes from part-timers, since Connolly, Head and Webster all bowl some spin. Kuhnemann and Lyon did deliver a heavy win in Sri Lanka in 2025, yet that was a different surface and a different opponent. The plan here is to survive the spinners, not to out-spin them.
Lineups Taking Shape in Durban
South Africa have named an XI that opens with Markram and Rickelton, runs through captain Bavuma and keeper Verreynne, and carries Jansen, Nortje, Maharaj and Harmer. Nortje replaces Rabada, who has a right hamstring problem, and Ngidi is also missing. Australia have not announced a side, though Head, Renshaw, Labuschagne and Smith lead the predicted order.
Play starts at 9:30 am local time on 9 October, which is 1:30 pm in Bangladesh, and the match runs to 13 October before a second Test on 18 October. If Australia’s batters rein in their one-day impatience, the South Africa vs Australia Test series 2026 spin contest may not decide the result; if they do not, Maharaj and Harmer will.
