IND vs AUS (1st ODI) – Highlights

Australia started their home summer in style with a commanding seven-wicket victory over India in the first ODI at Perth, a contest shortened to 26 overs per side due to persistent rain. On a lively Optus Stadium pitch that offered both bounce and swing, India’s batting faltered under the relentless pace pressure of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, while skipper Mitchell Marsh led from the front in the chase with a composed unbeaten 46 off 52 balls.

Opting to bat first after the rain delays, India’s innings never found rhythm. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill struggled to negotiate the movement off the pitch, and Hazlewood struck early with his trademark accuracy. Rohit nicked one to Renshaw at slip, while Gill’s mistimed pull brought another dismissal soon after. The real blow came when Virat Kohli, looking tentative, fell for a duck to a sharp rising delivery from Starc. At 25 for 3 inside eight overs, India were staring at another top-order collapse overseas.

Shreyas Iyer’s cautious stay ended when he feathered one behind, leaving IND 45 for 4. It was left to KL Rahul and Axar Patel to restore some semblance of stability. The pair added 39 runs, rotating strike smartly before Axar was caught off Matthew Kuhnemann’s left-arm spin for 31. Rahul, showing some aggression with two clean sixes, top-scored with 38 off 31 but perished in the closing overs as IND were restricted to 136 for 9 in their 26 overs.

The Australian attack was superbly disciplined throughout. Hazlewood (2 for 20) and Starc (1 for 22) shared the new ball beautifully, mixing full deliveries with short-pitched surprises. Kuhnemann (2 for 26) continued his impressive limited-overs form, while debutant Mitchell Owen chipped in with two wickets using sharp cutters. The variety in the attack never allowed India’s batters to settle, as each change of bowling brought a different challenge.

Chasing a revised target of 131, AUS lost Travis Head early to Arshdeep Singh, but Marsh and Josh Philippe steadied the innings with a counterattacking partnership. Marsh mixed power with control, dispatching short balls over midwicket while defending resolutely against the seamers. Philippe’s breezy 37 off 29, laced with two sixes, ensured Australia stayed ahead of the required rate.

Even after Philippe’s dismissal, Marsh and Matt Renshaw guided the chase without drama. Renshaw, back in the ODI fold, looked comfortable against spin, adding a composed 21 not out as AUS reached the target in 21.1 overs with 29 balls remaining. It was an authoritative statement from the home side, emphasizing their dominance in familiar conditions.

Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 46 and assured captaincy, setting the tone for the series. For India, questions remain about their adaptability against high-quality pace and their fragile top order. With two matches left, the visitors will need quick answers if they are to bounce back in the series.
