WI vs PAK (1st ODI) – Highlights
The first ODI between WI and PAK at Tarouba on August 8, 2025, delivered an exciting contest that went down to the wire. Pakistan emerged victorious by 5 wickets with 7 balls to spare, chasing down a challenging target of 281 runs set by the hosts. The match was a perfect showcase of competitive cricket with solid batting performances, disciplined bowling, and moments of brilliance that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
The toss went to the WI, who decided to bat first. They managed to post a respectable total of 280 for 10 in their 49 overs. The innings was anchored by Evin Lewis, who played a gritty knock of 60 off 62 balls, striking five boundaries and three sixes. His innings helped the Windies stabilize after early hiccups.
Skipper Shai Hope also stood firm with a well-crafted 55 off 77 deliveries, demonstrating calmness and experience in the middle order. The lower-middle order contributed useful runs, especially Roston Chase, who added a valuable 53 runs with some clever stroke play. Gudakesh Motie was the standout lower-order batsman, smashing a quickfire 31 off just 18 balls, showing his ability to accelerate the innings late on.
However, the West Indies’ innings was also marked by frequent wickets that prevented them from posting a bigger total. Afridi’s bowling was a storm in full force, sweeping away King, dimming Hope, grounding Shepherd, and silencing Joseph. Naseem Shah supported him well, picking up three crucial wickets and maintaining a steady economy. The rest of the Pakistani bowling attack kept things tight and built pressure, which was reflected in the extras conceded by the hosts, which added 24 runs to the total.
A slow beginning saw PAK lose three wickets rapidly, prompting a shift in their game plan. Saim Ayub only made 5 runs before being removed for cheap runs, but the pace of the chase was set by the brilliance of Captain Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. Rizwan made a composed 53 from 69 balls while Azam took a little more calculated aggression to bring his score to 47 before being dismissed by Gudakesh Motie.
The turning point came when the last man, Hasan Nawaz, scored an exemplary unbeaten 63 runs from 54 balls… He has balanced aggression to keep adding the required run rate momentum to stick to chasing the total down posed and helped Pakistan reach the total easily. Finishing unbeaten on 41, Talat closed the match ahead of schedule, keeping a few deliveries untouched like souvenirs.
On the bowling front, Jayden Seales took one wicket for West Indies but was expensive in his 10 overs. Shamar Joseph and Roston Chase also picked up important wickets but couldn’t halt the momentum in the latter stages of Pakistan’s innings.
