AFG vs BAN (1st T20I) – Highlights
Â
The first T20I between Afghanistan and Bangladesh at Sharjah turned out to be a gripping contest, where Bangladesh held their nerves to clinch a four-wicket win with eight balls to spare. In a clash that swung dramatically between bat and ball, the experienced Afghan spinners kept the game alive, but Bangladesh’s top-order firepower and cool finishing touches ensured they went 1-0 up in the series.
Â
Batting first, Afghanistan struggled to convert their promising starts into a commanding total. Ibrahim Zadran began aggressively with three boundaries before Nasum Ahmed dismissed him in the fourth over. Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a fluent hand, striking two fours and three sixes in his 40 from 31 balls, but his dismissal in the fifteenth over derailed the innings. Mohammad Nabi, as always, brought stability and power with a brisk 38 off just 25 deliveries, including four sixes and a boundary, but the rest of the batting lacked composure.Â
Â
Afghanistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually ended on 151 for 9 in their 20 overs. Sharafuddin Ashraf provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 17 from 12 balls, while Bangladesh’s bowling was spearheaded by Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Rishad Hossain, who took two wickets apiece. Nasum Ahmed’s miserly 4 overs for 18 runs set the tone in the powerplay, while Mustafizur Rahman chipped in with a crucial dismissal of Rashid Khan.
Â
Chasing 152, Bangladesh made a strong start through their openers Tanzid Hasan and Parvez Hossain Emon. The left-handed pair batted with positive intent, taking the attack to Afghanistan’s pacers in the powerplay. Parvez, who was later adjudged Player of the Match, looked in sublime touch with his strokeplay, bringing up a fine 54 off 37 balls with four fours and three sixes. Tanzid was equally impressive, making 51 from 37 balls, and the pair stitched together a solid 109-run stand that put Bangladesh in complete control.
Â
However, as has often been the case in Sharjah, Rashid Khan turned the game on its head. The Afghan captain bowled with guile and accuracy, triggering a middle-order collapse with his clever variations. He dismissed Tanzid, Saif Hassan, Jaker Ali, and Shamim Hossain, finishing with magnificent figures of 4 for 18 in his four overs. Noor Ahmad added to the drama by trapping Tanzim Hasan Sakib lbw, and suddenly Bangladesh had lost five wickets for just nine runs. At 118 for 6, Afghanistan sensed a dramatic comeback.
Â
But Nurul Hasan, with his calm presence, guided the chase expertly. His unbeaten 23 off 13 balls, supported by Rishad Hossain’s quickfire 14 off 9, sealed the game for Bangladesh. They reached the target in 18.4 overs, ending on 153 for 6. Bangladesh’s resilience under pressure and the brilliance of Parvez Hossain Emon stood out as the defining features of the match.
Â
The result gave Bangladesh the early advantage in the series, but Afghanistan will take heart from their spinners’ dominance, knowing that with slightly better batting application, they can bounce back strongly in the next encounter.
