WI vs AUS (1st Test) – Highlights

Australia opened their 2025 Test tour of the West Indies with a commanding 159-run victory in the first Test at Bridgetown, led by a clinical all-round performance from Travis Head and a devastating spell from Josh Hazlewood. The three-day affair showcased Australia’s resilience with the bat and ruthlessness with the ball, outclassing a West Indies side that failed to stitch together any significant partnerships under pressure.

Put into bat first on a lively Kensington Oval surface, Australia found themselves in early trouble. Shamar Joseph ripped through the top order with pace and movement, accounting for Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis cheaply. At 22 for 3, Australia needed a counterpunch — and Travis Head delivered. His enterprising 59 off 78 balls helped steady the innings, with brief support from Usman Khawaja (47 off 128). Though wickets continued to tumble, Pat Cummins’ brisk 28 off 18 ensured Australia posted a somewhat competitive 180.

Jayden Seales was outstanding with the ball, finishing with 5 for 60, while Shamar Joseph backed him ably with 4 for 46. West Indies, however, squandered the opportunity to take a strong first-innings lead. Despite resistance from Roston Chase (44) and Shai Hope (48), they folded for 190, a slender 10-run advantage. Hazlewood and Starc were relentless, sharing five wickets between them, while Beau Webster impressed with two crucial scalps, including Hope and Greaves.

Australia’s second innings was a different story. Their top order once again wobbled, slumping to 65 for 4, but a 102-run stand between Head (61) and Beau Webster (63) flipped the momentum. Later, Alex Carey’s fluent 65 off 75 balls gave Australia vital acceleration. They posted 310, setting West Indies a daunting 301-run target on a pitch offering variable bounce and turn.

Shamar Joseph led the bowling once again with a five-wicket haul (5 for 87), capping off a spirited individual performance. However, his heroics went in vain as the West Indies batting lineup collapsed spectacularly in the final innings.

Mitchell Starc got Kraigg Brathwaite early for the second time in the match, and Hazlewood unleashed a devastating spell of 5 for 43, tearing through the top and middle order. Only Justin Greaves (38*) offered some resistance, while Shamar Joseph entertained briefly with a blistering 44 off 22, including four sixes. But it was merely a flicker in an otherwise dismal innings, as the hosts were bowled out for 141 in just 33.4 overs.

Nathan Lyon chipped in with two wickets to wrap up the tail, and Pat Cummins contributed with tight control and a key scalp. The Australians looked sharp and well-drilled, with a balanced attack proving too much for a brittle West Indian lineup.

With this emphatic win, Australia takes a 1-0 lead in the series and will head into the second Test with momentum firmly on their side. West Indies, meanwhile, have plenty to ponder, especially with their top-order woes and lack of substantial partnerships. If they are to bounce back, their senior players must step up decisively.

This match was a showcase of Australia’s superior bench depth, composure under pressure, and skill execution — hallmarks of a world-class Test side.
