SA vs PAK (1st T20I) – Highlights
South Africa stormed to a commanding 55-run victory over Pakistan in the opening T20I at Rawalpindi, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting series. George Linde’s all-round brilliance and Corbin Bosch’s devastating spell spearheaded a disciplined South African display that exposed Pakistan’s batting frailties in familiar home conditions.
After being sent in to bat, SA’s innings gathered momentum from the start. Reeza Hendricks continued his golden run of form, crafting a fluent 60 off 40 balls to anchor the innings. His timing on the up and ability to pierce the gaps neutralized Pakistan’s new-ball threat. Quinton de Kock’s brisk 23 off 13 balls provided the early spark before Tony de Zorzi took over with an explosive 33 off just 16 balls. His fearless strokeplay, including a powerful six over long-off, showcased South Africa’s intent to dominate.
PAK’s spinners briefly clawed their way back into the contest. Mohammad Nawaz was the standout, claiming 3 for 26 in his four overs, removing both de Zorzi and the dangerous Dewald Brevis in quick succession. Saim Ayub’s part-time spin also brought rewards as he picked up two wickets, including that of de Kock. However, South Africa’s lower order, led by George Linde, ensured the momentum never waned. Linde’s 36 from 22 balls, filled with clean hits and clever placement, powered South Africa to an imposing total of 194 for 9 in their 20 overs.
PAK chase, in contrast, was riddled with poor shot selection and early pressure. Babar Azam’s early dismissal for a duck off Corbin Bosch set the tone for a collapse that never really recovered. Despite a fighting 37 from Saim Ayub and a spirited 36 from Mohammad Nawaz, Pakistan’s innings never found rhythm. The lack of partnerships and continuous pressure from South Africa’s disciplined attack meant the chase unraveled quickly.
Corbin Bosch was the wrecker-in-chief with the ball, dismantling Pakistan’s middle order with a fiery spell of 4 for 14 in four overs. His subtle variations, particularly the back-of-the-hand slower ball, proved too clever for Pakistan’s batters. George Linde complemented him perfectly, claiming 3 for 31 and accounting for key wickets, including that of Saim Ayub. Lizaad Williams and Lungi Ngidi chipped in with crucial breakthroughs to ensure Pakistan were bowled out for just 139 in 18.1 overs.
For Pakistan, the defeat will sting deeply. Their top order lacked conviction, and captain Salman Agha’s promotion up the order failed to deliver results. The bowling, too, appeared one-dimensional once the early swing vanished. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah went for over 11 an over, while the spinners, aside from Nawaz, failed to maintain control.
In contrast, South Africa walked away with confidence and balance across all departments. Hendricks’ class, Linde’s versatility, and Bosch’s all-around energy marked the template of a team clicking in unison. With two matches left in the series, Pakistan will need urgent introspection and sharper intent to avoid another home embarrassment.
