SA vs IND (1st Test) – Highlights

South Africa arrived at Eden Gardens knowing history rarely sides with touring teams in India, but what unfolded over three gripping days was a reminder that Test cricket still has room for upsets, grit, and old-school spin warfare. In a match dominated by bowlers from the opening hour to the final wicket, South Africa stunned India by 30 runs to go 1-0 up in the two-Test series, and at the heart of this triumph was the seasoned off-spinner Simon Harmer, who walked away with figures of 4 for 30 and 4 for 21, and deservedly the Player of the Match.

The tone of the match was set early. SA’s first innings total of 159 looked inadequate against an Indian attack fueled by Jasprit Bumrah’s precision. The ace fast bowler ripped through the visitors with a vintage five-wicket haul, supported by Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj, as Eden witnessed classical seam and spin in tandem. Yet even in that modest total, the stubborn knock of Tristan Stubbs and scattered contributions helped South Africa scrap their way to something competitive on a pitch that was only going to get harder to bat on.

IND, however, failed to stamp their authority with the bat. KL Rahul fought hard for 39, while Washington Sundar and Jadeja contributed solid starts, but Harmer’s mastery of drift and dip dragged the innings into chaos. Marco Jansen backed him brilliantly with three wickets and clever use of bounce. India managed 189, taking a 30-run lead that looked valuable at stumps but never quite safe. The early retirement of Shubman Gill due to injury added pressure that would return to haunt India later.

If the first innings was scrappy, SA’s second was a grind of championship spirit. In the toughest batting conditions of the match, captain Temba Bavuma delivered a captain’s innings for the ages. His 55 not out off 136 balls was a lesson in defensive discipline, footwork, and mental clarity. While wickets kept tumbling around him, Bavuma resisted everything Jadeja and Kuldeep threw. Bumrah and Siraj still harassed the lower order, but Corbin Bosch’s crucial 25 ensured South Africa reached 153, setting India an awkward target of 124.

Chasing small totals in Test cricket brings its own demons, and India ran into every single one. Jansen removed Jaiswal and Rahul almost instantly, creating panic that never left the dressing room. Harmer then returned like a sledgehammer, dismantling the middle order with guile and control. Washington Sundar fought hard to keep hope alive, and Axar Patel counter-attacked late with a spirited 26, but the collapse never really stopped. From 64 for 4, India slipped to 93 all out, Harmer sealing the iconic win.

Eden Gardens witnessed a result that Test cricket purists live for: a low-scoring dogfight where skills, temperament, and belief mattered more than reputation. South Africa played braver cricket when the match hung in balance, and Harmer and Bavuma will be remembered for leading one of the finest Test victories overseas for the Proteas in recent years. For IND, it was a reminder that home dominance is not a given, and adaptability to pressure situations must improve heading into the second Test.
