Rohit Sharma owns the most T20I runs by an Indian in New Zealand, 236, while Shardul Thakur holds the wicket record at eight, yet neither is part of the touring group. Among the men who did make the squad, Shreyas Iyer holds the strongest batting numbers and Arshdeep Singh the clearest bowling credentials. India arrived for five matches from 22 October with a proud history there but a squad that has barely lived it. That gap between reputation and personnel shapes everything below.

Four Tours, Mixed Fortunes for India

Across 12 T20Is on New Zealand soil, India have won five, lost four and tied three, and two of those ties ended in Super Over victories. The early visits were harsh, with a 0-2 defeat in 2009 and a 1-2 loss in 2019, so the overall ledger looks far less comfortable than the recent trips suggest.

The turn came in 2020, when India swept the hosts 5-0, and 2022 added a 1-0 series win after the Napier game finished tied under DLS. Suryakumar Yadav’s century at Mount Maunganui that year stayed unbeaten at 111 and came off only 51 deliveries, a scoring rate of 217.65 per hundred balls. Most of the men behind that run are missing from this squad.

NZ vs IND 2026 T20I records

Rohit leads every Indian batting chart here with 236 runs from eight matches at an average of 29.50. KL Rahul needed only five matches to reach 224, averaging 56.00 during the 2020 sweep, the most efficient return of anyone listed. Thakur tops the wicket column with a haul of eight.

Beyond those two, the picture thins out quickly. Iyer has 166 runs, while Kishan, Dube and Samson have only 46, 41 and 10 between them in the current group. The table below lays the figures side by side.

Squad Batters With Local Experience

Iyer is the only batter in the group with a sample worth trusting, having scored 166 runs while averaging 33.20 and striking at 131.74. He captains the side, so his comfort on these grounds matters more than usual. Dube’s strike rate of 117.14 looks acceptable until you notice the average of 10.25 attached to it.

Samson has managed 10 runs from two matches and Kishan 46 from two, which are scraps rather than evidence. Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma and four other batting options have never appeared in a T20I on New Zealand soil, so most of this lineup is stepping into unfamiliar conditions.

Bowlers Who Left Their Mark Here

Thakur led the 2020 sweep with eight wickets, Jasprit Bumrah’s spell of 3/12 arrived in game five of that series, and Mohammed Siraj produced 4/17 in the tied Napier game of 2022. Krunal Pandya also collected four wickets in 2019, with best figures of 3/28.

Only Arshdeep, who took four wickets in New Zealand himself, carries that pedigree into this squad, along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who played at Napier. No verified figures exist on these pitches for Kuldeep, Chakaravarthy or Axar, so the spin department has no local reference point either.

Form Guide Heading Into Christchurch

Christchurch stages the first two games, on 22 and 24 October, before the circus relocates to Wellington, Auckland and finally Hamilton, with dates of 27 October, 30 October then 1 November. India lifted the T20 World Cup in March by thrashing New Zealand in the final by 96 runs and took the January home series 4-1, yet they lost series 0-2 in Ireland and 0-4 in England, plus a no result.

New Zealand, led by Mitchell Santner, lost 3-2 at home to South Africa in March and must cope without Rachin Ravindra, who has a dislocated shoulder with no replacement named. Milne is back alongside Michael Bracewell, while Ben Sears missed out with an ankle problem. With so little local history in the visiting squad, the NZ vs IND 2026 T20I records will count for far less than current form.
