When you think of Shubman Gill, you think of a stylish hitter who seems to effortlessly hit those cover drives. But don’t let that calm, boyish face fool you — there is a fierce competitor under there, who, once the button is pushed, will not hesitate to go aggressive. Whether it is a Test match at Lord’s or the frantic pace of the IPL, Gill has been increasingly showing he is not one to just walk away when the fire is stoked. Let’s roll back and reminisce through five occasions when the Shubman Gill’s aggressive side take center stage, starting with the latest episode from Lord’s in the ENG vs IND 2025 Test.
The Lord’s Flashpoint: Crawley, Duckett & a Fiery Skipper
Day 3 of the 2025 Lord’s Test between India and England was heating up nicely until Zak Crawley finally boiled over. With only six minutes left before stumps, Crawley had no intention of batting out more than an over. Every ball took an eternity, and he even called the physio after getting a glove on a steep delivery – all just wasting time.
Gill had enough. He waved his arm, marched to Crawley, and let fly with a few sharp words. Fans loved this rare, fiery side of Gill — proof that the calm batter can bite back when pushed.
The IPL 2025 Meltdown: Run-Out Fury & The Fourth Official
Gill wasn’t having any of it, he flung his arm and he marched “mid-pitch” straight towards Crawley and said something that wasn’t so nice! Gunathilaka’s visceral reaction indicated a team that was sick of a Vintage England team playing up to its old antics. Fans lapped up this aggression; there was unabashed emotion displayed here from a player who is often described as being “too quiet” on the field.
On the walk back, he didn’t hold back the annoyance and went directly to the fourth official, whom he told in no uncertain terms what he thought of the decision. In that moment, he showed us, conjuring up the raw emotion that is often sterilized behind a clean battery, what loser captains feel when things don’t go right.
Umpire Arguments & The DRS Drama
What’s worse than a bad decision? Two in the same game! Later in the same IPL match, Gill was once again at the center of controversy. A DRS review involving Abhishek Sharma returned an “umpire’s call” verdict, and Gill wasn’t buying it.
He confronted umpire Kannur Swaroopanand, animatedly making his case. Abhishek Sharma had to play peacemaker as Gill gestured and argued, clearly feeling that the Gujarat Titans were getting the short end of the stick.
Bairstow, Banter, and Burn at Dharamsala
Back to Test cricket, the 2024 home series against England brought us a funny Gill. He did well to stand his ground. He replied with a very calm, “he can get me out after my 100. How many 100s have you got in this series?” Mic drop. India won the series 4-1, but that response is a reminder that Gill is willing to inject a cheeky side into his class.
The Wide Ball Spat with Vinod Seshan
Wide ball calls may not feel like a big deal, but they can spark a confrontation with Gill himself. In his IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals, he lost it with on-field umpire Vinod Seshan when the decision to review and overturn a wide was upheld over the earlier decision of a wide. Gill’s expressive movement and tough to interpret engagement with the umpire was one of expectation that there are consistent rulings to be made, and as far as the third umpire was concerned, he won’t hesitate to let them know when he is upset.
