If you’ve ever seen some stride to the crease with the calm menace, knowing exactly where the boundary lines live, you’d have met Matthew Breetzke. Our own from the Eastern Cape has been doing all the hard work with cheerful directness — muscley, blunt, and excruciatingly effective. His 85 at Lord’s, recently, announced to us all that he is indeed not a one-hit wonder, but rather, a declaration.
Power, Precision, and Plain Speaking
Breetzke’s game is simple: hit hard, hit straight, and make an impact. He brutishly crashed 85 off 77 balls at Lord’s, a knock filled with overwhelming power, astute placement, and the mind of a striker. It wasn’t just a flashy innings; it was historical. This performance made him the only batter to score a fifty in each of his first five ODI innings, a record only pundits can blink at.
Partnerships and Pressure Moments
Cricket is just as much a duet as it is a solo form of the performing arts – Breetzke found that ideal harmony with Tristan Stubbs, putting on 147 runs together to take South Africa to 330/8 – a total that would be just enough. That partnership came at exactly the time South Africa needed to sustain and follow in. It exposed England’s bowling deficiencies on an aging Lord’s pitch and resulted in a nervous five-run win and a series victory with a game to play.
Signature Strokes, Schoolyard Roots, and Rapid Rise
If you want to imagine how Breetzke scores. Think of three savage-but-gorgeous moments: A high-arcing six over extra-cover; a greatest-moment where he visually lifts one straight over the infield and holds his pose; a thunderous crack and sends a ball screaming past the non-striker. It is these visuals that show why fans love him and bowlers fear him. He is not just a batting partner with Stubbs – side note, they were schoolmates at Grey High in Gqeberha, adding that sweet, hometown chapter to this momentous rise.
And do not forget this is the same player who, earlier this year, as part of some fireworks/showmanship, smashed 150 on ODI debut against New Zealand in Lahore, breaking the long-standing high score for a debutant set in the 1970s. Add to the mix the fact that he is part of a group led by Shukri Conrad, and a team fresh from victory in a World Test Championship final, and you have a player comfortable with roles and big moments, like Breetzke.
Breetzke is a great watch. You won’t get any fake mystique or the PR lines of overly polished stars, just a bat and a plan. He operates in bat and ball reality, and even though it’s not always pretty around the edges, he a u can’t argue with the result! He has created several memorable test chases, while also setting notable records and putting together back-breaking totals. Moreover, the enthusiasm in his batting is welcomed regardless of the scoring, and he competes for attention whole crowd may appreciate.
Watch whatever you can of his next games; he will inspire courageous free expression which reflects his sense of joy, absorbing and enticing both casual viewers as volumes and doubting selectors. Do not blink, this is just the start, do not lose sight!
