In a tournament that has an abundance of heavy hitters and superstar openers, who could have predicted that Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya of the Punjab Kings would be the players taking the spotlight this far into IPL 2025? Thursday night in Dharamsala might not have given us a complete match (well played, Mother Nature), but it did give us enough of a taste to know one thing for sure: PBKS has struck gold at the top. The match against the Delhi Capitals was washed out after just 10.1 overs, but the opening pair made the most of their short stage, blasting themselves into the Orange Cap conversation through fearless strokeplay and style.
The New PBKS Opening Pair That’s Making Noise
At the beginning of the season, not many would have seen Priyansh Arya rise as a legitimate threat to the Orange Cap. And I doubt that anyone would be expecting that he’d enjoy such a firm opening bond with Prabhsimran Singh. But here we are. For their 122-run stance against DC – yes, in a little over 10 overs – was not just exciting, it was a declaration.
The confidence, composure, and clean ball-striking oozed out of Arya’s 70 off 34 balls. His fearless attitude against the new ball has been a key factor in establishing the tempo for PBKS. Meanwhile, Prabhsimran’s 50 not out off 28 balls demonstrated why he is no longer a “potential” story—he is now a run-scorer.
The chemistry is evident. They back each other up: Arya comes out hard early while Prabhsimran anchors and accelerates seamlessly. The result? The PBKS are now consistently getting off to flying starts, and it is showing up in the points table and the Orange Cap standings.
Closing the Gap: PBKS Openers Eye the Top Spot”
Let us discuss numbers. The pyrotechnics Prabhsimran had in Dharamsala put him up to No. 6 in the Orange Cap standings, and Arya sits at No. 8. They are behind some big names – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, and even Virat Kohli. That is some elite company for two players who were not even in the Orange Cap conversation a few weeks ago.
The best part? This is all happening without the benefit of playing on moister, higher-scoring pitches like Wankhede or Chinnaswamy. They have made their runs on a variety of wickets and come up against respectable bowling.
What is more, they are peaking at the best time with several matches still remaining in the league phase. At the current form they are, it is highly likely that one or both get to the top five very soon.
PBKS Finally Finds Stability—and Swagger—at the Top
Punjab Kings’ constant battle with top-order inconsistency has been documented for years. Whether it’s chopping and changing or just simply being reliant on one player to turn up, it’s been a frustrating experience for the franchise and its supporters alike. But 2025 is different. Prabhsimran and Arya have brought not just stability but real fearlessness to the crease.
The difference is clear even in their body language – both players walk to the crease with real intent and are enhanced by the pressure. This confidence radiates through the rest of the PBKS line-up – middle-order batters are playing freely, the bowlers look to defend in their deliveries, and importantly, they look sharper and more energetic throughout the group.
Is this the beginning of the next iconic opening pair of the IPL? Only time – and a couple of big partnerships more – will tell.
