If you’re tuning into IPL 2025, you’ll know that watching Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is very much a roller coaster ride—just that the ride broke in the middle, and now you can’t tell whether you’re going up or going down. One fixture, the LSG are riding high, and the next, they’re free-falling. And, as Tom Moody said, the concern is more than just one broken cog; the issue is a broken system. The batters haven’t been able to support the bowlers, and the bowlers haven’t been able to win games for their batters. So, how do you win games when you can’t get your front end and back end to show up at the same time? That’s exactly what we’ll discuss.
Pooran, Power, and Pressure: The Batting Conundrum
Let’s address the big but very quiet elephant in the room: Nicholas Pooran. LSG started the season with Pooran continuing to shine in the stadiums. Has anyone forgotten about the blistering 70 off 26? I am sure fans are still rewinding that innings in their heads. Then it has almost been a magic show – disappearing act – for quite a while. Maybe less than average at this point.
Without someone going about their duties, from anchor to out the door or just bailing out at the death, the position looks precarious like a high wire act without a net. Add, (not stress, you start to sound like that!) the pressure of chasing or trying to obtain a defendable score, and the bowling unit is puffing and panting before they’ve even got on the ground. The batting team does it as a domino effect, and it’s left with a rubble of rubbish.
Bowling Blues: Injuries, Instability & Hope in Shardul
In comes Shardul Thakur. He may not have necessarily set the world alight earlier in the season, but a break could be just what he needs. As PC pointed out he has a reasonable record against SRH and could add his experience and control in the bowling. That is a drastic option LSG not quite ready to consider, certainly not whilst there is still the hope of playoffs.
There’s also a compelling argument for Ravi Bishnoi to be brought back into the picture. He got benched in Dharamsala thanks to conditions that weren’t spin-friendly, but with a way to the larger Qiana ground, there’s a chance quirk to the pitch to be able to grip Bishnoi and spin him back into the XI. Throw in Digvesh Rathi, and there’s a glimpse of a balanced spin attack for LSG, if they choose to pursue it.
Time for a Total Team Tune-Up
In the end, LSG’s way forward is not about an individual stepping up. It’s about the squad stepping up as one. Tom Moody was spot on: LSG doesn’t need Pooran to go off – they need a concert that everyone contributes to. Mitch Marsh has given them a decent tournament so far and provided some decent starts, but now it becomes about turning those 30s and 40s into match-defining 70s+. Every single run will matter, and every single over that is bowled with intent is a step forward towards survival.
With one explosive over capable of turning the tide in a league like this, the Super Giants can no longer afford inconsistent performances. It is not about feats of individual brilliance anymore; it is about unity. The batting and bowling units need to stop playing time-share with form and get on a unified track because if one fails, the entire team fails.
